If it’s a website you want to be a member of or a social media site you want to join, you always want to do away with the “formalities” and get started as soon as possible. Nobody likes to waste time filling in their area codes and security questions in a sign up form. Hence the form should bear minimum fields and so the user is not discouraged from signing up or filling his/her personal details.
